Rent the top of Google, or own a slice of it (plus the AI answer surfaces).
Google Ads can produce leads tomorrow. AI SEO produces them next quarter and the year after that, and it gets you cited inside Google AI Overviews on top. Most businesses need a bit of both, in the right order.
Google Ads is the fastest way to appear in Google search results: you pay per click, you appear above the organic listings, and you can start spending today. The visibility stops the moment the budget stops, and ads do not get cited inside AI answer engines like AI Overviews, ChatGPT, or Perplexity.
AI SEO landing pages take 30 to 90 days to start ranking, and the asset compounds. Every page added makes the matrix stronger, and each is engineered to be cited inside AI-generated answers. Once the matrix is in place, the cost is a fixed monthly subscription regardless of how many clicks it produces. Most service businesses we work with use ads short-term while AI SEO builds, then taper.
Where the two diverge.
| Dimension | Kelso Creative | Google Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Speed to first click | 30 to 60 days (organic indexing) | Hours |
| Cost-per-click economics | Fixed monthly subscription regardless of clicks | Scales linearly with traffic |
| Stop-paying behaviour | Pages stay, ranking gradually decays over months | Visibility stops same day |
| AI answer engine visibility | Cited inside Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity | Not surfaced inside AI answers |
| Compounding effect | Yes, asset grows over time | No, flat performance |
| Customer-side trust | Sits outside the paid-placement category — no “Sponsored” label, no built-in discount | “Sponsored” label triggers an explicit credibility discount (~67% of UK consumers trust ad-laden recommendations less, PartnerCentric 2025) |
| Cost-per-lead economics | Subscription-bundled, no per-lead cost | £30 to £60 per qualified lead typical for UK trades |

When Google Ads is the better choice
- You need leads this week and have no other channel running.
- You are testing a new offer or geography and want fast signal before committing to a build.
- Your conversion rate from ads is already strong and the unit economics work.
- You are bridging the 30 to 60 day AI SEO indexing window after a Kelso Creative build.
We are not the right call for everyone. Where Google Ads fits better, we say so on the discovery call too. Better for both of us.
About Google Ads and the comparison.
Should I run ads while AI SEO builds?
Often yes. Ads bridge the 30 to 60 days where AI SEO is indexing but not yet ranking. Most clients keep a small ads budget running through the first 90 days, then taper as the organic pages start producing volume.
Do you run Google Ads campaigns?
No. We do not run paid traffic ourselves. Plenty of agencies do and we will recommend ones who do good work if you need a referral. Our job is the long-term organic and AI-search asset.
What if ads are cheaper than AI SEO long-term?
Rarely true at scale. At low volumes ads can be competitive. As volume grows, the per-click cost stays flat while the AI SEO subscription stays fixed, so the maths bends in organic’s favour. Over the first year, organic typically beats paid on cost-per-lead for trades businesses by a meaningful margin, and ads do not get you cited inside AI Overviews at all.

Both end up with a website. One leaves you to figure out SEO, AI search, and conversion. The other comes with the system built in.
Kelso Creative vs Squarespace
Both look nice. Only one comes with the AI SEO system that brings customers to the door.
Kelso Creative vs WordPress
WordPress can do anything. Assembling that capability into a working AI SEO system takes months and a lot of plugin licences.
